Typical of Hofmann’s work was this fine study of Rudolf Berking on a Motuihe path. Despite the congenial surroundings, there was a heavy mental toll for many internees; many had dependent wives or families struggling for survival back in the islands, in New Zealand – or in Germany. Rudolf Berking had two children, a son and daughter, who were caught up in the maelstrom of war in a turbulent Europe.
