The guarded enclosure on Motuihe Island housed the dormitories, living areas and kitchen and dining facilities. The grim looking camp was deceiving – prisoners could visit Auckland on a regular basis for dental treatment, for shopping and – about once a month – to watch the silent movies, accompanied by a single guard who usually ducked off to do his own thing.
