The Germans in Samoa: Snapshots from Albums

The Germans in Samoa 53

Fritz Stunzner was a builder and architect whose brilliant construction career in Samoa was cut tragically short by war and banishment back to Germany in 1919.

Fritz, his Samoan-born wife, Mary Ellen (nee Betham), and four of their children returned to their beloved Samoa in 1925. Fritz chose a different occupation…but the grim 20th century was not yet done with him or his family.

This photo shows Fritz and Mary in about 1916.
