To Walk Under Palm Trees

The Germans in Samoa: Snapshots from Albums

TGIS 3-45

A group of 20 or so sailors from a navy ship can be seen near the volcanic vent of Matavanu, which measured about 300 metres long. This visit must have been in Matavanu’s quieter later phase.

Tourists came by boat to Safune and then travelled to the lava field on horse or cart.  The land journey took about an hour and a half.
